Andrew Quagliata is a Senior Lecturer in Management Communication at Cornell University’s Nolan School of Hotel Administration. Dr. Quagliata teaches courses in business writing, persuasive communication, entrepreneurial communication, and real estate communication. He engages with industry by speaking and delivering workshops on topics related to interpersonal communication, presentation skills, workplace writing, relationship building, storytelling, and influence. Professor Quagliata holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Communication from the University at Buffalo. Prior to his arrival at Cornell, he held professional positions in finance and higher education.

Communication is one of the most important skills in business. Throughout this program, you will review the foundations of effective verbal and written communication in a variety of business settings and scenarios. Building on those foundations, you will develop your ability to use persuasion when addressing audiences through planned speeches, writing, or presentations, as well as during unscripted situations such as impromptu discussions. This program includes a year of free access to Symposium! These events feature several days of live, highly participatory virtual Zoom sessions with Cornell faculty and experts to explore the most pressing leadership topics. Symposium events are held several times throughout the year. Once enrolled in your program, you will receive information about upcoming events.
Throughout the year, you may participate in as many sessions as you wish. Attending Symposium sessions is not required to successfully complete the certificate program.
Course list
Regardless of your industry, you have probably used PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Keynote to report significant data or ideas to others within your organization or beyond. Communicating this way is effective only if the presentation clearly articulates your points. The main points of the presentation, the visual aspects, and structure of your slides have to work in concert to convey your message. If the visuals are distracting, they run the risk of obscuring your insights. The pre-made templates provided by PowerPoint or other presentation tools may, in fact, be extremely visually distracting and inappropriate for many business contexts.
Creating your own template allows you to customize a briefing deck that specifically targets your audience and embodies visual integrity. And creating reading reports, or summaries, to send out to key stakeholders afterward or in place of a presentation, that adhere to the same design principles and best practices, allows you to present a visually appealing summary of your briefing deck.
So how do you create a professional briefing deck presentation as well as a standalone reading report that embodies visual integrity while integrating your key points and visual evidence? In this course from Andrew Quagliata, Senior Lecturer at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration, you will discover the visual design principles and content guidelines necessary to curate a professional briefing deck and reading deck report. You will develop your own briefing deck template using the visual standards that specifically target your audience and contexts. You will have the opportunity to develop two supporting briefing deck slides with appropriate message titles and visual evidence such as charts, graphs, photographs, or artistic elements. You will employ the structural components used in briefing decks to create a sound structure that guides your audience through your points seamlessly. Finally, you will convert your two briefing deck slides into a compelling and professional one-page report.

To be an effective leader, you must be able to articulate your thoughts and positions in a clear and concise manner.
Professor Angela Noble-Grange of Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management draws on her own extensive experience as a speaker and communicator to guide students through the preparation and delivery process. She discusses how to identify the communication purpose and analyze your expected audience. She then shares how to formulate and rehearse your message, including how to pay attention to nonverbal communication.
To fine-tune these skills, this course includes interacting with fellow students. Students will participate in discussion forums and will record and share a video of a short presentation that serves as the course project. This provides rich opportunities for students to hone their communication and presentation skills in a practical way, and to learn from the efforts of others.

Mediation is widely used to settle disputes ranging from conflict between neighbors to conflict between nations. Though personal disagreements and international commerce don't share the same substance or consequences, the key procedural elements of the mediation process are the same for both, so workplace conflicts tend to take the same shape regardless of the industry or the size of the conflict.
In this course you will focus on the use of mediation in resolving organizational conflict where the manager or supervisor serves in the role of mediator. Even if you are not a trained mediator, you can draw on proven mediation techniques to help resolve workplace conflict in productive ways. During this course, you will closely examine a workplace scenario and practice properly setting expectations for mediation of that conflict. In each module, new information will be revealed that will ask you to adapt to the various needs of the disputing parties. Additionally, you will practice handling unforeseen emotional outbursts in a productive way and ultimately propose solutions that consider everyone's interests. Through creative work in examining the scenario and reflecting on how the lessons might apply to your own workplace conflicts, you will learn how to expertly prevent inevitable workplace conflicts from escalating.

A crisis can have a tremendous impact on the people involved and on an organization's performance and reputation, so it's important to communicate effectively in order to minimize negative consequences. Preparing for a crisis through the creation and ongoing analysis of a crisis communication plan can help minimize negative reactions and fallout. In this course, you will define crisis, paracrisis, and the goals of crisis communication. You will share your own experiences and practice identifying potential crises, creating a crisis communication plan, choosing a crisis communication team, and evaluating the plan.
A key component of preparing for a crisis is crafting messages for internal and external stakeholders. Messages must be quick, consistent, and open, and preparing initial statements ahead of time will help leaders and spokespersons communicate effectively during a crisis. You will examine the content of effective initial statements with the opportunity to review real-life examples, evaluating them for quality and success. You will practice addressing difficult questions and criticisms, exploring acceptable and graceful responses.
Once the crisis is over, it's important to review what worked well, what didn't, and to update the crisis communication plan for next time. Reflecting on a real life example, you will evaluate the response to the crisis and the crisis communication plan itself.

As the client, you will always have a finite marketing budget, but you can use best practices to yield the greatest value from the portion of it that you're spending with an agency. You will discover a simple calculation to determine whether you can afford a PR firm now; and if you can't afford one now, you will identify concrete steps you can take towards that goal. Faculty Authors
A graduate of the Johnson MBA program, Angela Noble-Grange is a Senior Lecturer of Management Communication at Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management. Professor Noble-Grange teaches Oral Communication and Management Writing. Her interests include persuasive speaking and writing as well as gender and race differences in message perception.
Professor Noble-Grange was the founding director of the Office for Women and Minorities in Business (now ODI) in 1999 and president of the Noble Economic Development Group, a micro-enterprise development consulting company, from June 1994 to January 1999. She has served on numerous boards and is currently a trustee for Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondacks. Professor Noble-Grange earned her B.A. in Communication Studies and Russian in 1983 and her MBA from Johnson in 1994.
Amy Newman is a Senior Lecturer of Management Communication at the School of Hotel Administration, Cornell SC Johnson College of Business. She teaches courses in business writing, persuasive communication, organizational behavior, and corporate communication. Professor Newman is the author of “Business Communication: In Person, In Print, Online” (Cengage, 10e) and “Building Leadership Character” (Sage, 2018). Prior to joining Cornell, she was an adjunct instructor at Ithaca College, eCornell, and Milano, The New School for Management and Urban Policy in New York City. Professor Newman spent most of her career in corporate positions and external consulting roles. Internally, she held management positions in human resources and leadership development. As an external consultant, she worked to improve employee performance and communication in hospitality, technology, education, publishing, financial services, and entertainment companies. Professor Newman has won grants to develop technology-based learning solutions as well as awards for teaching excellence and student advising. She is a director-at-large of the Association for Business Communication.
Craig R. Snow, a senior lecturer at Cornell University, has taught, researched, written about, and provided consulting services concerning managerial communication for the past 40 years. He previously served as assistant director of the Business Writing Program at Purdue University and later directed the Managerial Communications Program at The Olin School of Business at Washington University. He has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching from both Purdue and Cornell.
Dr. Snow’s teaching is enriched by hands-on experience in business. He has served as director and executive director of a nonprofit children’s summer camp in New York State’s Catskill Mountains. He has also worked as a senior communications specialist for McKinsey & Co. in New York City, and he has provided consulting services for businesses in hospitality, banking, healthcare, manufacturing, technology, pharmaceuticals, and other industries. Dr. Snow is the co-author of Prentice Hall’s “Guide to Report Writing” (2002).
Peggy Odom-Reed is a Senior Lecturer in the marketing and management communication area at the School of Hotel Administration, where she teaches courses in management communication. She currently serves as the course chair for HADM3650: Persuasive Business Communication for Hospitality Leaders. She is also one of the founding faculty fellows of the Cornell Institute for Healthy Futures.
Dr. Odom-Reed earned a Ph.D. in organizational communication from the Department of Communication at Cornell University and has taught courses in leadership communication and organizational communication. Her research is focused on communication (social) networks, leadership, teams, and distributive collaborative work.
Dr. Odom-Reed has corporate experience in human resources at 3M Company. With her strategic knowledge in this field, she is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). She has also offered leadership and communication coaching at Cornell University.
With her commitment to improve diversity and inclusion at Cornell, Dr. Odom-Reed served on the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force for Cornell SC Johnson College of Business and participated as a member of the Campus Experience Subcommittee on the Presidential Task Force on Campus Climate. She currently serves as the Faculty Chair on the Undergraduate Admissions Committee at the School of Hotel Administration.
Barbara Mink is a Senior Lecturer of Management Communication at the Johnson Graduate School of Management. She is a management communication professional with a focus on intercultural communication, leadership, and persuasion. Professor Mink teaches persuasive and informational writing for business purposes, as well as how to craft business presentations that are clear, concise, and compelling. She was news director of WHCU radio from 1978 to 1986 and taught radio journalism at Ithaca College and Cornell. Professor Mink served on the Tompkins County Legislature for 12 years and as its chair for five. She was also founder and director of the Light in Winter Festival of Science and the Arts from 1999 to 2011. Professor Mink is a visiting lecturer at ESCP Europe in Paris, where she teaches effective leadership through communication. She is also an active painter with an international presence.
Maria Wolfe is a senior lecturer of management communication at the Cornell Nolan School of Hotel Administration and teaches courses in business writing, persuasive communication, and oral delivery skills. She has over 25 years of teaching experience and has taught communication and management classes in the U.S. and internationally. Maria holds a PhD in rhetoric and professional communication and has won several teaching excellence awards. Most recently, her expertise led to two newly developed eCornell courses: “Impactful Unscripted Communication” and “Virtual Communication.”
Maria has worked with business professionals and industry groups to coach them in effective written and oral skills, powerful stage presence, overcoming speech anxiety, and leadership communications. In addition to her involvement in undergraduate and executive education programs, Maria serves as the Communication Center director at the Nolan School of Hotel Administration.
Dr. Theomary Karamanis is a multiple-award-winning communication professor and consultant with 25 years of global experience. She is a full-time Senior Lecturer of Management Communication at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business and regularly delivers executive education programs in leadership communication, crisis communication, and strategic communication. Dr. Karamanis has held several professional leadership positions, including Chair of the Global Communication Certification Council, Chair of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Academy, and Chair of the IABC Awards Committee.
Dr. Karamanis’s academic background includes a Ph.D. in Communication Studies, a Master of Arts in Mass Communication, and a post-graduate certificate in telecommunications, all from Northwestern University, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Athens University of Economics and Business. She also holds professional certifications as a Strategic Communication Management Professional (SCMP), online facilitator, and executive program instructor.
Dr. Karamanis has been actively engaged in various industries (private, nonprofit, and government) and fields of expertise, including corporate communication, media and PR, higher education administration and teaching, and consulting. She has lived and worked in Canada, Greece, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States of America.
Dr. Karamanis is the recipient of 40 professional communication awards, including 12 Platinum MarCom awards, seven Gold Quill awards, four Silver Quill awards, and a Comm Prix award. In 2020, she received the Award for Excellence in Communication Consulting by the Association of Professional Communication Consultants and the Association for Business Communication. Dr. Karamanis is the author of several books and academic papers on communication and regularly delivers presentations at international conferences and other business forums.
Glen Dowell is an Associate Professor of Management and Organizations at the Johnson Graduate School of Management, Cornell University. He researches in the area of corporate sustainability, with a focus on firm environmental performance. Recent projects have investigated the effect of local demographic factors on changes in pollution levels, the role of corporate merger and acquisition in facilitating changes in facility environmental performance, and the relative influence of financial return and disruption on the commercial adoption of energy savings initiatives.
Professor Dowell’s research has been published in Management Science, Organization Studies, Advances in Strategic Management, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Management, Industrial and Corporate Change, Journal of Business Ethics, and Administrative Science Quarterly. He is senior editor at Organization Science and co-editor of Strategic Organization, is on the editorial boards of Strategic Management Journal and Administrative Science Quarterly, and represents Cornell on the board of the Alliance for Research in Corporate Sustainability (ARCS). He is also the Division Chair for the Organizations and Natural Environment Division of the Academy of Management.
Professor Dowell teaches Sustainable Global Enterprise and Critical and Strategic Thinking. He is a faculty affiliate for the Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise and a faculty fellow at the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future.
Ariel Avgar is an Associate Professor at the ILR School at Cornell University and Associate Director for Research and Student Engagement with the Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution. His research focuses on two primary areas within employment relations. First, he explores the role that employment relations factors play in the healthcare industry. As such, he examines the effects of a variety of workplace innovations, including new technology, delivery of care models, and innovative work practices, on patients, frontline employees, and organizational performance. Second, he studies conflict and its management in organizations with a focus on the strategic choices made by firms. He seeks to better understand the consequences of conflict for employees and employers. In addition, his research investigates the adoption and implementation of organizational level conflict management practices and systems. His research has been published in a number of journals including: Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Industrial Relations, British Journal of Industrial Relations, Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution, International Journal of Conflict Management, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Negotiation and Conflict Management Review, Advances in Industrial and Labor Relations, Health Services Research and Medical Care. He received the 2008 Best Dissertation Award and the 2013 John T. Dunlop Scholar Award, both from the Labor and Employment Relations Association and serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the association. His paper (with Eric J. Neuman) titled “Blind spots and mirages: A dyadic approach to the study of team conflict” received the 2012 Best Paper: New Directions Award from the Academy of Management Conflict Management Division. He received a Ph.D. in Industrial Relations from the ILR School at Cornell University and a B.A. in Sociology and an LL.B in Law from Hebrew University. He served as Law Clerk for the President of the Israeli National Labor Court before being admitted into the Israeli Bar. Prior to joining ILR, he was an associate professor (2014-2016) and assistant professor (2008-2014) at the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Andrew Quagliata is a Senior Lecturer in Management Communication at Cornell University’s Nolan School of Hotel Administration. Dr. Quagliata teaches courses in business writing, persuasive communication, entrepreneurial communication, and real estate communication. He engages with industry by speaking and delivering workshops on topics related to interpersonal communication, presentation skills, workplace writing, relationship building, storytelling, and influence. Professor Quagliata holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Communication from the University at Buffalo. Prior to his arrival at Cornell, he held professional positions in finance and higher education.
A graduate of the Johnson MBA program, Angela Noble-Grange is a Senior Lecturer of Management Communication at Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management. Professor Noble-Grange teaches Oral Communication and Management Writing. Her interests include persuasive speaking and writing as well as gender and race differences in message perception.
Professor Noble-Grange was the founding director of the Office for Women and Minorities in Business (now ODI) in 1999 and president of the Noble Economic Development Group, a micro-enterprise development consulting company, from June 1994 to January 1999. She has served on numerous boards and is currently a trustee for Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondacks. Professor Noble-Grange earned her B.A. in Communication Studies and Russian in 1983 and her MBA from Johnson in 1994.
Amy Newman is a Senior Lecturer of Management Communication at the School of Hotel Administration, Cornell SC Johnson College of Business. She teaches courses in business writing, persuasive communication, organizational behavior, and corporate communication. Professor Newman is the author of “Business Communication: In Person, In Print, Online” (Cengage, 10e) and “Building Leadership Character” (Sage, 2018). Prior to joining Cornell, she was an adjunct instructor at Ithaca College, eCornell, and Milano, The New School for Management and Urban Policy in New York City. Professor Newman spent most of her career in corporate positions and external consulting roles. Internally, she held management positions in human resources and leadership development. As an external consultant, she worked to improve employee performance and communication in hospitality, technology, education, publishing, financial services, and entertainment companies. Professor Newman has won grants to develop technology-based learning solutions as well as awards for teaching excellence and student advising. She is a director-at-large of the Association for Business Communication.
Craig R. Snow, a senior lecturer at Cornell University, has taught, researched, written about, and provided consulting services concerning managerial communication for the past 40 years. He previously served as assistant director of the Business Writing Program at Purdue University and later directed the Managerial Communications Program at The Olin School of Business at Washington University. He has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching from both Purdue and Cornell.
Dr. Snow’s teaching is enriched by hands-on experience in business. He has served as director and executive director of a nonprofit children’s summer camp in New York State’s Catskill Mountains. He has also worked as a senior communications specialist for McKinsey & Co. in New York City, and he has provided consulting services for businesses in hospitality, banking, healthcare, manufacturing, technology, pharmaceuticals, and other industries. Dr. Snow is the co-author of Prentice Hall’s “Guide to Report Writing” (2002).
Peggy Odom-Reed is a Senior Lecturer in the marketing and management communication area at the School of Hotel Administration, where she teaches courses in management communication. She currently serves as the course chair for HADM3650: Persuasive Business Communication for Hospitality Leaders. She is also one of the founding faculty fellows of the Cornell Institute for Healthy Futures.
Dr. Odom-Reed earned a Ph.D. in organizational communication from the Department of Communication at Cornell University and has taught courses in leadership communication and organizational communication. Her research is focused on communication (social) networks, leadership, teams, and distributive collaborative work.
Dr. Odom-Reed has corporate experience in human resources at 3M Company. With her strategic knowledge in this field, she is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). She has also offered leadership and communication coaching at Cornell University.
With her commitment to improve diversity and inclusion at Cornell, Dr. Odom-Reed served on the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force for Cornell SC Johnson College of Business and participated as a member of the Campus Experience Subcommittee on the Presidential Task Force on Campus Climate. She currently serves as the Faculty Chair on the Undergraduate Admissions Committee at the School of Hotel Administration.
Barbara Mink is a Senior Lecturer of Management Communication at the Johnson Graduate School of Management. She is a management communication professional with a focus on intercultural communication, leadership, and persuasion. Professor Mink teaches persuasive and informational writing for business purposes, as well as how to craft business presentations that are clear, concise, and compelling. She was news director of WHCU radio from 1978 to 1986 and taught radio journalism at Ithaca College and Cornell. Professor Mink served on the Tompkins County Legislature for 12 years and as its chair for five. She was also founder and director of the Light in Winter Festival of Science and the Arts from 1999 to 2011. Professor Mink is a visiting lecturer at ESCP Europe in Paris, where she teaches effective leadership through communication. She is also an active painter with an international presence.
Maria Wolfe is a senior lecturer of management communication at the Cornell Nolan School of Hotel Administration and teaches courses in business writing, persuasive communication, and oral delivery skills. She has over 25 years of teaching experience and has taught communication and management classes in the U.S. and internationally. Maria holds a PhD in rhetoric and professional communication and has won several teaching excellence awards. Most recently, her expertise led to two newly developed eCornell courses: “Impactful Unscripted Communication” and “Virtual Communication.”
Maria has worked with business professionals and industry groups to coach them in effective written and oral skills, powerful stage presence, overcoming speech anxiety, and leadership communications. In addition to her involvement in undergraduate and executive education programs, Maria serves as the Communication Center director at the Nolan School of Hotel Administration.
Dr. Theomary Karamanis is a multiple-award-winning communication professor and consultant with 25 years of global experience. She is a full-time Senior Lecturer of Management Communication at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business and regularly delivers executive education programs in leadership communication, crisis communication, and strategic communication. Dr. Karamanis has held several professional leadership positions, including Chair of the Global Communication Certification Council, Chair of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Academy, and Chair of the IABC Awards Committee.
Dr. Karamanis’s academic background includes a Ph.D. in Communication Studies, a Master of Arts in Mass Communication, and a post-graduate certificate in telecommunications, all from Northwestern University, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Athens University of Economics and Business. She also holds professional certifications as a Strategic Communication Management Professional (SCMP), online facilitator, and executive program instructor.
Dr. Karamanis has been actively engaged in various industries (private, nonprofit, and government) and fields of expertise, including corporate communication, media and PR, higher education administration and teaching, and consulting. She has lived and worked in Canada, Greece, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States of America.
Dr. Karamanis is the recipient of 40 professional communication awards, including 12 Platinum MarCom awards, seven Gold Quill awards, four Silver Quill awards, and a Comm Prix award. In 2020, she received the Award for Excellence in Communication Consulting by the Association of Professional Communication Consultants and the Association for Business Communication. Dr. Karamanis is the author of several books and academic papers on communication and regularly delivers presentations at international conferences and other business forums.
Glen Dowell is an Associate Professor of Management and Organizations at the Johnson Graduate School of Management, Cornell University. He researches in the area of corporate sustainability, with a focus on firm environmental performance. Recent projects have investigated the effect of local demographic factors on changes in pollution levels, the role of corporate merger and acquisition in facilitating changes in facility environmental performance, and the relative influence of financial return and disruption on the commercial adoption of energy savings initiatives.
