Over the past several months, in both our professional and personal lives, we have been engaged in thought-provoking debate about the many ways racism permeates all aspects of our society. We encounter terms like “systemic racism,” “safe neighborhoods,” and “good schools,” without understanding how decisions about where we put down roots influence our abilities to connect and empathize with our fellow humans.
In this online discussion, we’ll delve into the shameful origins and ongoing impact of segregation in modern America. Government policies may have helped to engineer our segregated neighborhoods, but we spend most of our time at work, where we have the opportunity to form meaningful relationships with people of other races and backgrounds. Yet this rarely happens. Until we take advantage of the integrated spaces that are available to us through work, play, education, and culture, we’ll continue to lead largely segregated lives at a time when inclusivity is the only way forward.
