Over the past several years, we’ve heard a lot about diversity and inclusion within the fashion community. What began as a public discourse around cultural appropriation and racially diverse runways has recently expanded to include a broader vision for the industry’s business practices. But are “diversity” and “inclusion” just being used as popular buzzwords, or is there a real shift underway within the industry?
In this Keynote, eCornell’s own Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) facilitator Dr. Mikaila Brown will explore inclusivity in the fashion industry. She will begin with an honest audit of the industry’s current state of affairs, specifically addressing the existing practices that make it both easier and harder to integrate diversity into its framework. She will then highlight the key diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) tools and strategies that will work best for the industry. Finally, she will explain how fashion professionals can apply the newest terminologies, frameworks, and understandings in D&I research to better empower and engage their teams.
