Crystal Geng is the principal expert in charge of Group ESG transformation at Ping An Insurance (Group) Company of China, Ltd., on sustainable strategy as well as ESG investment/responsible investment. PM of Ping An’s A.I. ESG platform, Ms. Geng is also a former ESG, sustainability, and green building consultant. She is responsible for daily operations of the Group ESG Office, establishing integrated ESG management including investment, insurance, loan service, and technology businesses. Ms. Geng is also responsible for the Group ESG investment framework, guidance, criteria, and target setting.

China’s government supports R&D efforts for green technology innovation, but a major challenge that lies ahead is the greening of China’s manufacturing system to create a more sustainable economy. International cooperation for the greater good of mitigating global warming is urgently needed, and in this online session, we’ll discuss China’s green trajectory along with the opportunities and challenges it presents for the rest of the world.

Speakers
An attorney by profession, David Wu specializes in business litigation and estate planning. He is a member of the 2021 Cohort of the NY Metro Program at the Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management as well as a Fellow of the Emerging Markets Institute, where he had the honor to represent Cornell at the EMI International Case Competition in 2019. In addition to his experiences working in the Asia Pacific region and with the customers based there, Mr. Wu very much enjoys learning more about the global emerging markets through the various research project opportunities, global speaker series, and networking opportunities offered by the Emerging Markets Institute.
Gary Xiao has practiced China-related international business, investment, and commercial law for over 24 years, with a focus on global foreign investment, M&A, intellectual property, and global dispute resolutions. He specializes in industries as both a lawyer and investor in medical and pharmaceutical products, aviation, and real estate development. Mr. Xiao graduated from the Foreign Languages Department of China West Normal University and Southwest University of Political Science and Law. He has provided legal service for numerous Chinese and foreign enterprises and local government entities, such as China Dongfang Electric Corporation; Angang International Trade of Panzhihua Co., Ltd.; Jian’an Industrial Co., Ltd.; Sichuan Airlines Corporation; Export & Import Bank of China, Sichuan Branch; and Sichuan Provincial Department of Justice. Mr. Xiao has represented many Chinese and global companies in investing outside of China in countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, India, Tanzania, Japan, and Fiji. He is a good business partner and legal counsel for global companies doing business and investing in China.
Henry Li is the co-founder and co-managing partner of YK Law LLP and head of its China practice. He is also a partner of Beijing Yingke Law Firm, the largest law firm in China. Mr. Li practices principally in the areas of corporate and international law, with emphasis on cross-border mergers and acquisitions, joint venture transactions, international sales and distribution transactions, technology transfers and licensing, cross-jurisdiction dispute resolutions, and entertainment law matters. Mr. Li has extensive experience in transactions between China and the U.S. He has also represented transactions in the following jurisdictions by collaborating with local counsel: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Israel, Kazakhstan, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Turkey, and the U.K., among other countries. Mr. Li is also very familiar with offshore corporate structures. In 2015, he was appointed as a board member of Yingke Global Legal Service Alliance, the first international alliance of independent law firms headquartered in China, with member firms practicing law in 83 countries.
Lourdes Casanova is a senior lecturer and the Gail and Roberto Cañizares Director of the Emerging Markets Institute in the SC Johnson School of Management at Cornell University. She has been named one of the 50 most influential Iberoamerican intellectuals and one of the 30 most influential Iberoamerican women intellectuals by Esglobal, a digital magazine on international relations. Dr. Casanova is a Fulbright Scholar and has a Master’s degree from the University of Southern California as well as a Ph.D. from the University of Barcelona. Her commentary has been featured in Latin Trade, Agenda Publica, CNN en Español, and Voice of America.
As Head of Commodity Equities Research and a Managing Director with CICC, Yan has 16 years of equities research experience. Before joining CICC, he worked for Standard Chartered Bank covering the commodities sector in both China and other Asian countries with rich resources. Prior to that, he worked for Allard Partners on a buy-side role. During his tenure as a commodities analyst, Yan has researched extensively on supply and demand, price trend, social and environmental impact, investment opportunities of commodities such as steel, nonferrous metals, coal, cement, etc. He has been advising investors both in China and abroad. Yan and his team have been highly ranked in surveys conducted by Institutional Investor and Asia Money. Yan has a Bachelor’s Degree from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and an MBA from University of New South Wales.
As director of the Cornell China Center, Ying Hua works to craft and execute the university’s China strategy and provide academic and programmatic direction for the new center in Beijing. She chairs the China Center Faculty Advisory Committee and works closely with the Cornell China Advisory Board. Dr. Hua also partners with staff in the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs as well as the center’s executive director to coordinate and support college- and unit-level activity in the center and administer research and other grants for China engagement.
Dr. Hua is an associate professor in the Department of Design and Environmental Analysis in the College of Human Ecology. She is also a faculty fellow of Cornell’s Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future and the Cornell Institute for Healthy Futures, a core faculty member of the Cornell East Asia Program of the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies, and co-director of Cornell’s International Workplace Studies Program. At Cornell, Dr. Hua is a member of the graduate fields of design and environmental analysis and of real estate. She also is a member of China’s Green Building Council.
Dr. Hua holds a Ph.D. in building performance and diagnostics from Carnegie Mellon University as well as an MEng in building science and technology and a BArch, both from Zhejiang University, China.
