AI as a Transformative Tool

Anne Miroux is Faculty Fellow at the Cañizares Center for Emerging Markets in the Johnson School of Business at Cornell University. She has over 30 years of experience in international trade and finance.

Dr. Miroux began her career in the United Nations Center on Transnational Corporations in New York, where she was involved in the negotiations on the UN Code of Conduct on Transnational Corporations. In the mid 1980s, she joined the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), where she specialized in issues related to debt in developing countries, foreign direct investment and transnational corporations, and technology and innovation policies. For several years, Dr. Miroux led the organization’s work on foreign direct investment (FDI) statistics and directed the World Investment Reports (WIR), the United Nations flagship report on FDI and transnational corporations. She also served as the editor of the UN Transnational Corporations Journal. Dr. Miroux published a number of papers and articles and led research projects and technical assistance activities in developing countries on debt, FDI, and development.

Until late 2015, Dr. Miroux was the Director of the Division on Technology and Logistics in UNCTAD, in charge of the organization’s work on technology and trade logistics. She was also the Head of the Secretariat of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD). Dr. Miroux is a member of the Advisory Board of the Technology and Management Center of the Department of International Development at Oxford University as well as a member of the Board of NetExplo. Dr. Miroux has an MBA from HEC – Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (Jouy-en-Josas, France) and a diploma from IEP (Institut d’Etudes Politiques – Paris). She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from University of Paris I – Sorbonne.

Lourdes Casanova is the Gail and Roberto Cañizares Director of the Cañizares Center for Emerging Markets and a Senior Lecturer at Cornell University’s Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management. Formerly of the strategy department at INSEAD, Dr. Casanova specializes in international business with a focus on Latin America and multinationals from emerging markets.

In 2014 and 2015, Dr. Casanova was named one of the 50 most influential Iberoamerican intellectuals by Esglobal. She is a member of the board of directors of Boyce Thompson Institute.

Dr. Casanova is a Fulbright Scholar who holds a Ph.D. from Universidad de Barcelona and an M.A. from the University of Southern California.

Dr. Mark Mobius is synonymous with emerging and frontier markets, investing with a reputation as one of the most successful and influential money managers over the past 30 years. He is Chairman of Mobius Emerging Opportunities Fund.

Dr. Mobius is widely known as a pioneer in emerging market investing. In 1987, he was appointed by Sir John Templeton to run one of the world’s first emerging market funds. Dr. Mobius went on to spend more than three decades at Franklin Templeton Investments, most recently as Executive Chairman of the Templeton Emerging Markets Group. Under his leadership, the group’s assets under management grew from US$100 million to a whopping US$50 billion with the successful launches of numerous investment funds focused on Asia, Latin America, Africa, and Eastern Europe.

Dr. Mobius has also contributed to developing international policies for emerging markets. He served on the World Bank’s Global Corporate Governance Forum as a member of the Private Sector Advisory Group and as co-chairman of its Investor Responsibility Task Force in 1999.

Dr. Mobius has won numerous industry awards and has authored 13 books, including “The Inflation Myth” and “The Wonderful World of Deflation,” which has gained international acclaim. In October 2022, World Economic Forum selected the book as one of the five must-read books on inflation. Dr. Mobius earned his Ph.D in Economics and Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1964. He has also studied at Boston University, University of Wisconsin, Syracuse University, Kyoto University, and the University of New Mexico.

Megha Kumar leads Oxford Analytica’s work in the Global Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) sector, advising major corporate and public-sector clients on the global public policy, geopolitics, and regulation of cybersecurity, disruptive technologies, and the digital economy.

Dr. Kumar’s work on digital labor platforms was published by Digital Future Society in 2022. Previously, she led the Asia analysis, specializing in South Asia (particularly India), Indonesia, and Thailand, advising G20 governments, multinational corporations, and multilateral institutions on these emerging markets.

Before joining Oxford Analytica, Dr. Kumar taught history and politics at the University of Oxford and held the prestigious Past and Present Research Fellowship at the University of London. She has also worked as a journalist in Delhi, with broadcast appearances in outlets such as the BBC, South China Morning Post, The Diplomat, and Time Magazine.

Dr. Kumar’s book “Communalism and Sexual Violence in India: The Politics of Gender, Ethnicity, and Conflict” was published by I.B. Tauris in June 2016. She holds a D.Phil. and an M.St. from the University of Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar, and a B.A. from the University of Delhi.
