On the Rise and Resilience of Anti-Muslim Bigotry Today
Monday, March 18, 2024, 5pm EDT
Event Overview
In this talk, Moustafa Bayoumi, journalist and professor at Brooklyn College, will discuss how Arabs and Muslims are among the least understood groups in the United States today as well as how Arabs and Muslims also occupy outsized roles regarding how they’re discussed, represented, and even regulated. He will address the history of Arabs and Muslims in the United States and examine the relationship among representation, domestic repression, and American foreign policy.
This talk is the second in the series "Antisemitism and Islamophobia Examined." The College of Arts & Sciences has partnered with the Office of the Provost and departments and programs across Cornell University to bring four leading academics to campus in the Spring 2024 semester to explore the history of these forms of prejudice, examine the impact on Jews and Muslims in America today, and map the legal landscape for addressing these issues. These cross-disciplinary talks will also reflect on the relationship between the history of Israel/Palestine, the outbreak of the current conflict, and contemporary manifestations of antisemitism and Islamophobia.
