Emerging Markets

Andrew Karolyi is the Charles Field Knight Dean of the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business. He is a Professor of Finance and International Business as well as holder of the Harold Bierman Jr. Distinguished Professorship in the Johnson Graduate School of Management. Dr. Karolyi is also a Professor of Economics in Cornell’s College of Arts and Sciences.

A scholar in the area of investment management, with a specialization in the study of international financial markets, Dr. Karolyi has published extensively in journals in finance and economics, including the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and Review of Financial Studies. He has also published several books and monographs, and his research is featured in print and electronic media such as the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, The Economist, Time, New York Times, Washington Post, Forbes, BusinessWeek, and CNBC. Dr. Karolyi recently completed a four-year term as executive editor of the Review of Financial Studies, one of the top-tier journals in finance. He has also served as an associate editor for a variety of journals, including the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Empirical Finance, Journal of Banking and Finance, Review of Finance, and the Pacific Basin Finance Journal.

Dr. Karolyi is a recipient of the Michael Jensen Prize for Corporate Finance and Organizations (2017), the Fama/DFA Prize for Capital Markets and Asset Pricing (2005), the William F. Sharpe Award for Scholarship in Finance (2001), the Journal of Empirical Finance’s Biennial Best Paper Prize (2006), and Johnson School’s Prize for Excellence in Research (2010). Dr. Karolyi leads various executive education programs in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia, and he is actively involved in consulting with corporations, banks, investment firms, stock exchanges, and law firms. He is president-elect/program chair of the Western Finance Association, has served as a director of the American Finance Association, and is past chairperson of the board of trustees and past president of the Financial Management Association International. Dr. Karolyi received his B.A. (Honors) in Economics from McGill University and worked at the Bank of Canada for several years in its research department. He subsequently earned his MBA and Ph.D. degrees in Finance at the Graduate School of Business of the University of Chicago.

Anne Miroux is Faculty Fellow at the Cañizares Center for Emerging Markets in the Johnson School of Business at Cornell University. She has over 30 years of experience in international trade and finance.

Dr. Miroux began her career in the United Nations Center on Transnational Corporations in New York, where she was involved in the negotiations on the UN Code of Conduct on Transnational Corporations. In the mid 1980s, she joined the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), where she specialized in issues related to debt in developing countries, foreign direct investment and transnational corporations, and technology and innovation policies. For several years, Dr. Miroux led the organization’s work on foreign direct investment (FDI) statistics and directed the World Investment Reports (WIR), the United Nations flagship report on FDI and transnational corporations. She also served as the editor of the UN Transnational Corporations Journal. Dr. Miroux published a number of papers and articles and led research projects and technical assistance activities in developing countries on debt, FDI, and development.

Until late 2015, Dr. Miroux was the Director of the Division on Technology and Logistics in UNCTAD, in charge of the organization’s work on technology and trade logistics. She was also the Head of the Secretariat of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD). Dr. Miroux is a member of the Advisory Board of the Technology and Management Center of the Department of International Development at Oxford University as well as a member of the Board of NetExplo. Dr. Miroux has an MBA from HEC – Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (Jouy-en-Josas, France) and a diploma from IEP (Institut d’Etudes Politiques – Paris). She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from University of Paris I – Sorbonne.

Fred Olayele’s diverse career spans academia, government, finance, and international development. Dr. Olayele has consulted widely and advised many public and private organizations in Canada, United States, and Africa. He has taught economics, strategic management, and public policy across four Canadian universities. He previously served as Chief Economist and Senior Vice President with the New York City Economic Development Corporation, where he oversaw a wide range of economic policy initiatives. Prior to that, he advised the Canadian provincial governments of British Columbia and Saskatchewan across the FDI, economic development, and energy policy domains. He is a Senior Fellow at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University. He holds a PhD in Economics from Lancaster University, and an MA in Economics from the University of Victoria in British Columbia.

Georges Ugeux is the founder of Galileo Global Advisors, which offers CEOs, boards of directors, and governments independent advice on international business development, mergers and acquisitions, and capital raising. The firm specializes in cross-border transactions to and from emerging markets. Prior to founding Galileo, Dr. Ugeux was group executive vice president of International & Research at the New York Stock Exchange, where he built and managed the exchange’s international group.

Dr. Ugeux holds a doctorate in law and is licentiate in economics from the Catholic University of Louvain. He has lectured there and at the College of Europe in Bruges.

Lorenzo Pavone oversees the Emerging Markets Network (EMnet), a network of multinational companies promoting policy dialogue and analysis on business in emerging markets, hosted by the OECD Development Centre. He has experience in emerging markets, private sector development, competitiveness, investment promotion, and business climate assessment.

Mr. Pavone holds an MBA from HEC in Paris and a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Rome La Sapienza. He is a member of the Faculty Advisory Council of the Cañizares Center for Emerging Markets at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business.

Lourdes Casanova is the Gail and Roberto Cañizares Director of the Cañizares Center for Emerging Markets and a Senior Lecturer at Cornell University’s Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management. Formerly of the strategy department at INSEAD, Dr. Casanova specializes in international business with a focus on Latin America and multinationals from emerging markets.

In 2014 and 2015, Dr. Casanova was named one of the 50 most influential Iberoamerican intellectuals by Esglobal. She is a member of the board of directors of Boyce Thompson Institute.

Dr. Casanova is a Fulbright Scholar who holds a Ph.D. from Universidad de Barcelona and an M.A. from the University of Southern California.

Marcelo Koji Kawabata is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of São Paulo, a visiting researcher at Cornell University, and a Federal Government of Brazil Tax Auditor. Mr. Kawabata holds an MBA from Florida State University, an M.S. in Administration from the University of São Paulo, a specialization in tax law from Getulio Vargas Law School of Sao Paulo, and a B.S. in Engineering from Escola Politecnica, University of Sao Paulo. His studies focus on innovation strategy, digital government, tax administration, and policy.

Veneta Andonova is Associate Professor and former Dean of the School of Management at the Universidad de los Andes in Colombia. She received her Ph.D. degree in Management from Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Spain. Dr. Andonova had been full-time faculty at top business schools in Latin America and at the American University in Bulgaria. Her interests lie at the intersection of business strategy and institutional analysis, with a focus on Latin American multinationals, non-market resources, and entrepreneurial ecosystems in emerging markets.

Dr. Andonova’s research has been published in Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Development Studies, Journal of Socio-economics, Telecommunications Policy, Review of Law, and Economics, among others. A regular presenter at international conferences, Dr. Andonova’s most recent book, “Entrepreneurial Ecosystems in Unexpected Places,” was published in 2019 by Palgrave Macmillan.

Yuan Jia-Zheng is a Postdoc Fellow at Harvard Business School. She holds a Ph.D. in Economic History as well as a B.A. in Administration and Business Management (Pompeu Fabra University) and an M.Sc. in Economic History (University of Barcelona). She serves as an Associate Lecturer in World Economic History and International Economic Organization at the Faculty of Economics and Business (University of Barcelona) and collaborates as an author and lecturer of M.Sc. at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. She specializes in the economic and business history of China. Her research interests include internationalization, industrial policies, and technology transfer in the automobile industry.
