As the Associate Vice Provost for Engagement and Land-Grant Affairs and the Director of Academic Initiatives in the Einhorn Center for Community Engagement, Richard Kiely stewards the design and implementation of the Engaged College Initiative and oversees academic programs and initiatives. He also offers general advising to faculty, staff and students interested in incorporating community-engaged learning into their teaching and research endeavors.

In 2002, Dr. Kiely received his Ph.D. from Cornell University, and from 2002 to 2006, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Lifelong Education, Policy and Administration at the University of Georgia. In 2005, he was recognized nationally as a John Glenn Scholar in Service-Learning for research that developed a transformative service-learning model.

In 2011, 2014 and 2015, Dr. Kiely served as co-editor of two special sections on global service-learning for the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning. He is a co-author of “Community-Based Global Learning: The Theory and Practice of Ethical Engagement at Home and Abroad” (2018) and co-founder of the Community-Based Global Learning Collaborative, a multi-institutional network advancing ethical, critical and aspirationally de-colonial community-based learning and research for more just, inclusive and sustainable communities.

Dr. Kiely was the inaugural director of Cornell’s Center for Community-Engaged Learning and Research (2011-2015).

Amy Newman is a Senior Lecturer Emerita of Management Communication at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business. At the Nolan School of Hotel Administration, she taught courses in business writing, oral communication, persuasive communication, corporate and crisis communication, and organizational behavior. At the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, Newman served as the faculty director of Grand Challenges, a community-engaged learning curriculum.

Before Cornell, Newman had a career in human resources at Canon, Scholastic, and Reuters. She is a graduate of Cornell University and Milano School of Policy, Management, and Environment at The New School.

Newman is the author of “Recovery at Work: Using Twelve Step Principles for Professional Success,” “Building Leadership Character,” and the textbook “Business Communication and Character” (12th edition).
