Prior Learning Assessment Policy

Purpose

This policy establishes eCornell’s approach to evaluating prior learning experience for students enrolled in non-credit professional certificate programs.

Policy Statement

eCornell evaluates prior education, training, and experience for all students. Students must request the evaluation and provide proper documentation. This policy applies uniformly to all students enrolling in eCornell non-credit certificate programs.

Submission Process

All students have the opportunity to disclose prior education, training, or experiences during the enrollment process. If a review is requested, examples of documents the student can submit include, but are not limited to:

• Prior coursework/transcripts
• Training
• Prior certifications
• Documented experience

Evaluation of Prior Education, Training, and Experience

eCornell maintains a process to evaluate prior education, training, and experience when such information is submitted by a student. Evaluations are conducted using established academic and programmatic criteria to determine whether prior learning is equivalent in level, scope, and learning outcomes to the requirements of the program. The submission of materials for evaluation does not guarantee the award of credit.

Based on the evaluation, eCornell may determine that prior learning does not meet the criteria for credit toward program requirements. In such cases, no reduction in program length or charges will apply. When credit is awarded as a result of this evaluation, eCornell will adjust the length of the program and associated charges proportionately. Prior learning credit can apply to no more than 25% of a program.

Documentation and Record Keeping

eCornell maintains written records for each prior learning assessment. Prior learning assessment records are retained in compliance with Cornell University record retention policies.
