Current growth in the number and proportion of older adults is unprecedented in the history of the United States. Two factors — longer lifespans and aging baby boomers — will combine to double the population of Americans aged 65 years or older during the next 25 years to about 72 million. By 2030, older adults will account for roughly 20% of the U.S. population.
The complexity of senior living options, from retirement communities to long-term care communities, is further exacerbated by the varying degrees of costs associated with housing along with utility expenses, maintenance, and repairs. The demand for affordable senior living is high, and there is a growing need for senior living options for low-income and middle-income older adults. Finding affordable senior living is crucial for older adults who are living on fixed incomes. It is even more vital for older adults who are living below the national poverty level.
Sponsored by the Cornell Institute for Healthy Futures, this live online session features insight from senior housing experts, who will identify challenges and opportunities within the affordable senior living industry. With labor shortages a key ongoing issue, the rising costs for goods and services as inflation surges will also pose challenges as senior housing communities look to expand to accommodate the growing population.
