Part 1 of the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business web series Research With Impact: Engaging Our Interdisciplinary Themes

The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business is offering a fall webinar series showcasing its deep expertise across five critical interdisciplinary themes: Emerging Markets; Business of Food; Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Technology; Investing at Cornell; and Behavioral Economics and Decision Research.

Launched earlier this year, Emerging Markets is the newest of these interdisciplinary themes. To mark the expansion into this vital area of research, the first installment of the webinar series will be “Restoring Financial Stability in Emerging Markets: The Case Study of India.”

Emerging Markets theme lead Lourdes Casanova will moderate a panel discussion of India’s economic tides that includes Cornell SC Johnson College of Business Deputy Dean and finance professor Andrew Karolyi, Cornell professors and renowned economists Kaushik Basu and Eswar Prasad, and NYU Stern professor and former Deputy Governor at the Reserve Bank of India Viral Acharya, author of the newly published “Quest for Restoring Financial Stability in India.”

This learned group will explore how finance and investment policy; the independence of central banks in emerging markets; and measuring, modeling, and managing financial stability are needed in large emerging market economies.
  • Monetary policy under changing financial and macroeconomic environments in emerging markets
  • Managing financial cycles in emerging markets
  • Improving monetary policy transmission through the banking channel
  • Developing viable capital markets and ensuring external sector resilience
  • Enhancing the autonomy of the central bank, the markets, and the real economy
  • The importance of independent regulatory institutions in emerging markets, including their central banks
