Geoengineering

Douglas MacMartin’s research lies at the intersection of engineering dynamics and climate science, using advanced control methodologies to evaluate solar geoengineering approaches, most notably stratospheric aerosol injection.

Professor MacMartin has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, briefed the U.N. Environment Programme, testified before the U.S. Congress, and contributed to the 2021 U.S. National Academies report on research and governance in climate intervention. His work is supported by the National Science Foundation and Cornell’s Atkinson Center for Sustainability, where he is a faculty fellow.

Natalie Mahowald’s research investigates Earth system feedbacks affecting climate change, with a focus on the atmospheric transport of biogeochemically important aerosols, like desert dust, and their role in the carbon cycle.

A faculty fellow at the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability, Professor Mahowald conducts research combining global transport and climate models with satellite and in situ observations. She was a lead author on the 2018 U.N. IPCC Special Report on Global Warming, an AAAS and AGU fellow, and a Guggenheim and AMS awardee. Professor Mahowald is also recognized as a Thomson ISI Highly Cited Researcher.

Daniele Visioni specializes in atmospheric modeling, focusing on the environmental impacts, risks, and uncertainties associated with solar geoengineering, such as stratospheric aerosol injection.

Professor Visioni serves as a faculty fellow at the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability and as co-chair of the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project, a global effort to coordinate and assess climate model simulations of solar geoengineering. As a research collaborator with the Degrees Initiative, he advocates for inclusive, global engagement in discussions about climate intervention.
